There are close to 700 species in this genus, widely scattered throughout tropical America and almost all are epiphytic. Both plants and flowers differ in size. Plants produce either clusters of pseudobulbs with broad leaves that develop from a horizontal rhizome, or narrows pseudobulbs which are well spaced on a creeping rhizome. The flowers are variable in color and size. Cultural requirements vary with the habitats of the particular species, but most enjoy bright light and could be grow successfully under intermediate conditions. Most of the species need to be watered all year round.
