This genus is one of the most spectacular with about 350 species that are found in from Mexico into Brazil. Most grow at relatively high elevations in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. The structure of the flowers is in contrast to that of many orchids, as the sepals are very large in comparison with the other segments of the flower. Many species of masdevallia can be cultivated with success in cool greenhouse condition. Many will also tolerate intermediate conditions. Most species flower during winter and spring. High humidity is very important for these plants.
